Nuestra Señora del Carmen is the common name for Santa María del Monte Carmelo, one of our Marian titles. It is named after its veneration on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, near Haifa. The devotion to this Marian title was spread worldwide by the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, also known as the Carmelites. In Spain, Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica, she is the patroness of the sea, "Stella Maris," and also the patroness of the Spanish Navy. This title is used for people named Carmen, Carmela, or Carmelo, who celebrate their name day on the feast of Our Lady of Carmen, July 16, which the Catholic Church commemorates as a facultative memorial.
