The Virgin of Candelaria or Our Lady of Candelaria is a Marian advocation of the Catholic religion that has its origin in Tenerife (Spain). Its etymology derives from a candlestick or candle that refers to light: the holy light that leads to the good way and redemption and enlivens faith in God. Its feast is celebrated, according to the liturgical calendar, on 2 February, and it recalls the presentation of Jesus in the Temple of Jerusalem after his birth and the purification of Mary. The Virgen de la Candelaria is, in its place of origin, the patron saint of the Canary Islands and is classified as a black Virgin. His devotion is deeply rooted in other parts of Spain, and in Latin American countries.
